There has been some interest in my Airfield project so it appears it deserves a thread of its own here.
First, here is the prototype.
It is an Army base on Kwajalein, in the Marshall Islands where guided missiles are tested. My dad worked on the radar systems and we lived in dependent housing on the island. I went to grade school there 1968-1971. the Airfield was a 10 minute bike ride from our house so I spent alot of time watching planes. You can see the residential area in the background of this picture.
Here is another view from the street side. you can see a glimpse of the military end of the island in this picture.
Recently Ive been nostalgic about that time, and also I got interested in N scale model planes, so the two went together, and I'm building a diorama of the airfield, and a number of planes to display on it.
Airplanes in 1:144th are close enough to N scale that material from the two scales can be used interchangeably, with a few reservations.
The model is being built on a 20"x30" foam core board, with the possibility of adding modules both north (8th street side of terminal) and east (Aircraft maintenance buildings).
