National Train Day experiences?
I have the opportunity to take a train trip next month and been debating on which route I want to go.
My three potential routes are:
1 - The Short Trip: New Orleans > Chicago > New Orleans
(City of New Orleans roundtrip - 2 nights on train)
2 - The Medium Trip: New Orleans > Washington DC > Chicago > New Orleans
(Crescent > Capital Limited > City of New Orleans - 3 nights on train)
3 - The Long Trip: New Orleans > Los Angeles > Chicago > New Orleans
(Sunset Limited > Southwest Chief > City of New Orleans - 5 nights on train)
I'd love to do the California Zephyr but the arrival/departure times in California would require 2 hotel stays. The these trips are scheduled so I can visit a city and then get right back on the train for the night.
Anyway... to my question.
National Train Day is coming on up May 8th, and I could possibly schedule either the Chicago or Washington DC route so I would end up at the station for their NTD event if it's worth going.
I'm mainly interested in the equipment displays (specifically locomotives) the events in both cities mention, but I'm curious to what this actually means.
For those who've gone previous years, have they had engines/cars on display that you could climb aboard to look at and photograph?
