Mountain Backdrop test

Here are a few pictures of a scenery technique test. Most of this is from a recent Model Railroader article. Steps:

1) Tear up poly foam into shapes and spray paint.
2) Cut into cottonball size.
3) Dip in diluted glue (1 glue:2 water)
4) Dip into course turf. Let dry.
5) Spray with hair spray and sprinkle on fine turf.
5) Carve and paint foam mountain.
6) Plant poly foam balls in mountain with carpenter's glue.
7) Carve distant mountain top to fit.
8) Paint distant mountain, sprinkle fine turf onto wet paint.
9) Intall on backdrop.

My goal is to create an early fall day in eastern U.S. coal country.

The finished mountain is less than 3" deep. Due to space limits.

(Ignore the puffball cloud in the last picture)

Please provide critical feedback and or point me to other techniques.
