I haven't posted on what's happening on my new layout but it does have a new name. It's called the Hudson and Hartford.
Currently I am developing a track plan to handle car float operations on the Bay Ridge section of the layout. This area was used to receive and dispatch cars between Bay Ridge in Brooklyn, NY and Greenville Yard in Jersey City, NJ from 1915 thrugh the end of the Penn Central era. The tracks in this area belonged to the Long Island Railroad and the yard and trains to and from there were handled by the New Haven Railroad as part of the jointly owned and operated (with the Pennsylvania Rail Road) New York Connecting Railroad. The original yard and car float aprons are shown below:
You will note there are 4 float bridges each of which is conneted to its own yard. THis area was redone in the late 1960s or early 1970s and there are now 2 float bridges and 2 yards in the area. It was revised with the idea that all car float operations in Brooklyn and Queens woud be relocated here. However that never happened since those car float operations were relocated to Bush Terminal, which is just north of this area, instead. So the float bridges in Bay Ridge were never used.
I am modeling ths area as if it were being used to handle lots of car float service. So here is my problem.
I want to model the two center car float aprons and their accompanying yards in a space that is 18 inches wide and 4 to 5 feet in length. This are along a wal that is 9 feet 7 inches long. 7 inches of that length will be devoted to the car float aprons so the area that can be used by the tracks from the car float aprons and leading to and from the yards and yards them, selve can be use the entire 4 to five foot length.
Any help, criticisms, complaints and suggestions are welcomed.
