Atlas to release new coil steel cars

10/19/11 02:04 PM

N — Atlas will be releasing new 42-foot coil steel cars. According to the company, the models will feature prototypical painting and lettering, see-through walks, removable hoods, inside floor detail, and cut-levers. They have an estimated delivery time in the beginning of 2012.
The roadnames will be available for the following:
Undecorated (#50 000 837)
CSX (#50 000 8(38-41)) painted gray, black, and yellow

CSX (#50 000 84(2-5)) decorated blue and yellow

Kansas City Southern (#50 000 84(6-9)) painted black, red, yellow, and gray

Northwestern Oklahoma (#50 000 85(0-3)) decorated red, white, and yellow

Norfolk Southern (#50 000 85(4-7)) painted gray, black, blue, and red

SeverCorr (#50 000 8(58-61)) decorated red, white, blue, and yellow.
The standard models will retail for $29.95 each, and the undecorated model will retail for $24.95.
The increased volume of coiled steel transportation gave rise to a new purpose-built freight car. Previously rolls of coiled-steel had generally traveled in specially equipped gondola cars. In the 1960s a lighter type of car emerged specifically for hauling coils of steel in an integral trough. The car type gained popularity and eventually over 17,000 cars were built.
