Jackwade.....the alternative is to use the Kato Material Handling Car Commonwealth trucks, but you have to cut off the coupler extensions and then put a body mount coupler on the rear of the tender.

To place these MHC trucks on the Mikado tender you will need to make a shim out of styrene tubing and fit it over the tender bottom post on the front trucks only. The Mikado drawbar works fine on that.

I have converted most of my Mikdo tenders this way because the CNR Mikados had those kind of trucks on their tenders. So did some of the shorty tenders used on CN 2-10-2's and 4-8-2 Heavy Mountains.

If I can find a photo showing how they look, I'll post it.
